Is it Impulse Control Or Tech Addiction Keeping Me From Doing Chores?

What I am about to share happened when I was 17 years old but even though the situation is different - this still happens now. Back to 17, I was in my rebel stage. The problem was it was hard for me to stay off my iPad and phone. On this day, I was in my bedroom and my mom and dad reminded me to finish chores first before going on my tablet. At first, I did not even hear them. Then when the voices got louder, I acted like I wasn't listening because I could hear them getting angry. Then the voice got even louder and I didn't respond because I decided when I am playing a game like Amateur Surgeon, I do not want to be interrupted, because as you could imagine, games like these require a lot of concentration. I rudely said,” No! This is a very complex game that requires a lot of concentration”. I was probably screaming. I was being oppositional. Mom had heard enough about this refusal to do chores. She said,” You lost your tablet for the entire day”. When I realized, I had done something really wrong, I got really anxious. I completed those chores after all that because I felt really terrible about my decision.

I see know that there is a pattern when I use too much technology. At first, I really focus on my screen. It feels great to be in the digital world, lost in the game or funny video or whatever else I am watching. Time feels smooth and like it stands still. But it doesn't. Time goes by. It can make you late for class, miss an entire class or transform your attitude from good to bad. That means I noticed that if I spend too much time on my gadgets, my attitude changes from a totally happy attitude to an angry attitude. I feel that is totally unnecessary. My mom has helped me to understand the connection between my moods when I am in the digital world versus when I am interacting with people in the real world.

One of the things that I do is set timers to surf for a certain amount of time. It gives me permission to enjoy with a limit. I also like to check my screen time and set a scheduled time away from my screen. This doesn't always work. I sometimes notice my alarm goes off and my sneaky finger swipes up like it never happened. So that means I still get into trouble with it sometimes but I am working on it.

How does technology affect you? I would like to see if my readers notice the same changes in their behaviour as I have when I am on my gadgets too much.
