Hi readers,
Today I would like to share with you another person that has always been there for me when I needed it. I feel that it is important to reflect on who has helped me become who I am as a person because it helps you see how they encourage me and how sometimes, these people can give me strategies that work for me. Sometimes, they just help me to see that who I am is already okay. Sarah has done all of these things for me. She is my sister and number 1 supporter.
Sarah is younger but she is wise. At 3, she helped me when I had a swimming incident. I had a diving backwards fail and cut open my chin to the bone. Mom jumped right in to get me. Without being told, she ran to get Dad. She knew that I was in trouble and needed to go to the hospital.
Another thing that was so awesome for me was when she understood what I said even though my speech was unclear at the time. My sister believed that I knew more than I could say and would interpret for me. Even now, she looks out for me. When I am nervous or bored, she reminds me with one word to stop picking my fingers. Sarah has always treated me like a sister not like I was different. I know that sounds weird because she is my sister.
One of the things that has been the most fun is that Sarah helped me be cool with my language. She has helped me to find the balance between overkill and inappropriate vs. funny and jovial. Discovering new insults is a blast too. We are sisters, not saints, after all.
Over the past year, I discovered that Sarah makes the best and worst roommate. Last summer in Italy, we sneaked food, stayed up late, wrestled and happily took turns hogging the bedsheets. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided that we would roommate again in the large spare bedroom. She helped me explore new shows such as Botched or Naked and Afraid. There was more pillow fighting and staying up too late hours. We even snuck chips down there. Don’t get me wrong, we still fought over bed space even though it was a king-sized bed.
No matter where we are, Sarah embraces me for who I am. She is always looking out for me and I do my best to look out for her. I am her go-to for bug-killing, personal spell/fact check, and her alarm clock for getting her up in the morning. Together, we are a great team.
Look back in your life and what role has your brother or sister played? Let's discuss.
